In the year 2525, if man is still alive… Yes, I listened to Zag & Evans recently 😉 . It’s time to continue my blog here about my bike trip along the Danube. 5 years ago, in 2020, I started in Blinzern near Bern my bike trip to the origin of the Danube in Donaueschingen. From there, I followed the Danube and the EuroVelo route 6 until Bratislava. Unfortunately, that was the time when Corona began and Hungary announced to close the borders from 1st of September on. Although I would have managed to still get into the country before that date, I decided to return home. Traveling while almost everything is closed and everybody is in quarantine wasn‘t a promising plan. After 19 days and 1324km I travelled back by train. You can find the posts at https://touring.ropeko.ch/biking/2020-along-the-danube/
Meanwhile, Corona/Covid is more like a flu, war in Ukraine started, Trump has been somehow elected again, ChatGPT and other AI tools are an important source of knowledge, information and sometimes misinformation for us. I would say it is time to finish my original plan – as long as there are still non-electric bicycles.
At 25th August, I will travel by train to Bratislava and continue my journey. Finally 🙂
- 2025-08-31: Day 06 Baja – Mohács (39km, total: 523km)The bed in the guesthouse was very comfortable and after the shorter stage yesterday, I felt again fitter. On the stairs outside was a cat sitting. But it didn‘t want to be stroked. Just before leaving, I met the woman to whom the cat belongs. She is cycling through Europe and now slowly on the… Read more: 2025-08-31: Day 06 Baja – Mohács (39km, total: 523km)
- 2025-08-30: Day 05 Kalocsa – Baja (65km, total: 484km)The weather forecast is ratherbad for the next two days. A lot of rain and maybe some lightnings. I woke up and the sun was shining. I started to exchange the tube of the back wheel. The two reserve tubes looked two small. What a fail if I really took the wrong tubes from home… Read more: 2025-08-30: Day 05 Kalocsa – Baja (65km, total: 484km)
- 2025-08-29: Day 04 Dunaharaszti – Kalocsa (125km, total: 419km)Wow, that was a tough day. I never cycled so far yet. A new personal best with all the luggage, 35°, at least 20km gravel or farm path and with a back wheel losing continuously slowly air. I noticed in the morning that there isn’t that much air in the back wheel. But I assumed… Read more: 2025-08-29: Day 04 Dunaharaszti – Kalocsa (125km, total: 419km)
- 2025-08-28: Day 03 Nagymaros – Budapest – Dunaharaszti (79km, total: 294km)After some bread and smoked chili cheese, which I bought yesterday, I started a bit late at 10 at the camping. The first goal was the ferry at 11 in Vác. I was at 10:50 at the village. So plenty of time for a small detour to the triumphal arch, which was built in 1764.… Read more: 2025-08-28: Day 03 Nagymaros – Budapest – Dunaharaszti (79km, total: 294km)
- 2025-08-27: Day 02 Komárno – Nagymaros (104km, total: 215km)To answer the question from yesterday: the tent is great, more than enough space now. With the current weather, the tent isn‘t getting wet as well. I even didn‘t have to close the outer tent because it was still warm. In the morning, I went to a Lidl and bought bread, some creamy sauce with… Read more: 2025-08-27: Day 02 Komárno – Nagymaros (104km, total: 215km)
- 2025-08-26: Day 01 Bratislava – Komárno (111km)At 7:15 I woke up, stayed still a bit in the bed and then ate breakfast in the hotel. The buffet was great. After check-out, I went to a fountain (Námestie slobody) and then visited the castle. At 10 o‘clock, I reached the EuroVelo 6 route, which I will follow to the Black Sea. The… Read more: 2025-08-26: Day 01 Bratislava – Komárno (111km)
- 2025-08-25: Day 00 Bern – Bratislava (by train)Today, my Danube adventure continues, finally after 5 years when I had to stop because of Corona restrictions. The bicycle with the luggage is about 40kg, very similar to the last time. This time, I could put everything into the four bags. It means as well to say goodbye to my wife and cat for… Read more: 2025-08-25: Day 00 Bern – Bratislava (by train)
