2025-08-28: Day 03 Nagymaros – Budapest – Dunaharaszti (79km, total: 294km)

After some bread and smoked chili cheese, which I bought yesterday, I started a bit late at 10 at the camping. The first goal was the ferry at 11 in Vác. I was at 10:50 at the village. So plenty of time for a small detour to the triumphal arch, which was built in 1764. Then a 180° on the street and full speed to the ferry. With 3 minutes remaining, I pushed my bicycle on the ship and enjoyed the short trip to the other side of the Danube. On the same ferry was again the family from yesterday, which I already saw earlier today at least 2 times and I met them later in the „small“ city Budapest again. They are from Canada and the father played waterpolo some days before.

In Tahitótfalu, I bought more to drink for today, since it is almost 35° (and tomorrow it won‘t be colder). The name of the city reminds me on Polynesian village names somehow 🙂 . Maybe influenced by the sea-like sand beaches from yesterday.

The bike path followed short a road with heavy traffic before Szentendre. And the headwinds became stronger. Tomorrow will be tough with full headwinds forecasted and 35°.

A few kilometers before Budapest, I reached a beach with a drink and food truck. I ate a halloumi wrap. With the chilled music it felt again like at the sea 🙂 .

The bike path was rather good to get into Budapest. Here I will just drive through because I visited the city already multiple times either for working or for the 24h logic puzzle marathon. Budapest and Prague are my two favorite cities in Europe until now. And at 18th September I will anyway be back here, meet my wife and enjoy some days Budapest. While driving along the Danube I still could enjoy the view on the parliament. Dict.cc just told me that „Sehenswürdigkeiten bestaunen“ is called „lionize“ in English. But Deepl doesn‘t want to know it: „I lionize“ is just translated to „Ich bin ein Löwe“, what is wrong. I am a taurus 😛 .

Back to travel blog: in the southern part I looked at the Nemzeti Atlékai Központ Stadion. First, I thought, why is it just open. Then I noticed an awesome tartan track and various fitness equipments, which are free to use. There were anyway many places, where people can use such fitness equipments for free here. It would be great if that would be the case in Switzerland too, but probably all the gyms would be against it. I run a full-speed round. It was kind of special to run with my legs, which are currently in bike mode. But I still managed to do an almost 3min/km average speed on the 700m round 😀 .

Now the part of searching bicycle signs started and I drove multiple times wrong. I missed one important right-turn (where the second cobblestone part starts) and I didn‘t want to go back because of the super bumpy cobblestone path. But at the end it would have been better since I had to follow a major road with a lot of traffic (luckily the bus lane could be used). Then I turned here and there left and right and after some time, I was back on the EuroVelo route 6. That was where the unpaved road started. So again it took some time because I could only drive slowly. In Dunaharaszti I reached the hotel. The dinner in the restaurant Bacchus (same as hotel) was delicious. First a garlic cream soup. I can‘t remember if I ever had such a good garlic soup! Also the burger with camembert, fries and self-made mayonnaise was great.
