2025-08-30: Day 05 Kalocsa – Baja (65km, total: 484km)

The weather forecast is ratherbad for the next two days. A lot of rain and maybe some lightnings. I woke up and the sun was shining. I started to exchange the tube of the back wheel. The two reserve tubes looked two small. What a fail if I really took the wrong tubes from home with me 😀 ! Therefore, I put again the old one into it because I couldn‘t see any hole and there was no air leaving somewhere, and went to a bike shop in the city. Now I have two hopefully matching reserve tubes. Update two days later: the original reserve tubes would have matched as well, they just didn’t look wide enough 😉 .

During this weekend, the Swiss „Schwing“ (kind of wrestling in sawdust) festival happens. It is only every third year. Therefore, I added VPN connection to watch it from time to time during the day. Unfortunately, the „Schwinger“ (not sure if the suggested translation „haymaker“ is really correct) from canton Bern couldn‘t fully convince. Hopefully, they will be better tomorrow.

I bought some breads for breakfast and lunch and finally started at noon when the rain slowly started too. After 10km I had to put on my rain robe and my rain shoe covers. Later when the helmet was already a bit wet, I put on my helmet rain cover as well.

Today, I will only go until Baja. Instead of the direct EV6 route, I cycled through the Danube-Drava national park. Meanwhile, the back wheel lost again almost all air and I replaced the tube with the newly bought one in the shelter of an underpass. After some kilometers were some barriers. I asked in a nearby restaurant if it is possible to cycle there. The man was very helpful and told me that I can just bypass the barrier and then follow the paved road. He also warned me that the street afterwards may have a lot of traffic. All the way through the national park was about 20km. Because of the rain, probably most birds were in the shelter and I almost didn‘t see any animals (except mosquitos, which are rather agressive and I must have been stung at least 10 times in the last five days although anti-mosquito spray). There was as well a small train through the park, probably some years ago since the nature is slowly taking over the rails again.

Highlights of the day: before crossing the bridge of the Danube to go to the national park, I saw a deer. Even more a highlight were the 5 boars directly at the street, where I tried to bring it behind me as fast as possible. I never saw wild boars yet. They looked rather cute. I had imagined them bigger. Maybe they were still quite young.

I planned again to go for a pizza and ended eating pasta. This time with spinach and smoked scamorza, my favorite cheese. Again delicious!
