2020-08-28: Day 18 Wien – Petronell-Carnuntum (54km, total: 1293km)

After the bike free day yesterday, Jolanda and I continued our bike trip in direction to Bratislava.

First we drove on the beautiful Donauinsel in Wien. 20km later we took a small and very fast ferry to get to the other riverside and to Haslau. The exit was a gravel beach. The boat just drove into the gravel and hinged the ramp down.

The last kilometers to Petronell-Carnuntum were rather exhausting because of the strong head- and crosswind. For the Roman museum wasn‘t enough time. We will visit it tomorrow morning. But we already looked at the amphitheatre. On the farmland around it are many fragments of bricks of the roofs of ancient Roman buildings. I would like dig in the farmland here and search for Roman artefacts 🙂 .

Tonight we were informed that Hungary will close the borders at 1st September. Therefore we decided to only travel to Bratislava and then take the train back. The number of places for bikes are very limited in the fast trains. My wife already bought the ticket yesterday. At the same train is no other free space for a bike, so that I will stay in Wien and take the train back to Feldkirch on Monday. Afterwards I will plan a bike route back to Bern that goes through Liechtenstein so that I can say that I was in Liechtenstein as well 😉 .
