2022-10-06: Day 06 Volkach – Bamberg (89km, total 502km)

Somehow I felt really good this morning. I slept already much better than the first night in the tent. Either it was because it was less cold or I wore a cap and didn‘t had a cold head.

The instruction booklet of the world sudoku championship has been published meanwhile. In my tent I studied it before getting up. I already made it through the first half 🙂 . It contains a good amount of well-known sudoku variations.

With the first sunshine I started full of energy today‘s tour. It seems that early morning is often a bit foggy along the river. So I can take that as a reason to always start a bit late 😛 .

The first part went through vineyards and other fruit plantations (i.e. apples, quinces). In Wipfeld I crossed the river in a small ferry. It just waited for me and opened the gate again so I could still join.

I reached Schweinfurt, where I ate further my bread, that I already bought at the second day. I didn‘t visit the city. During the way to Hassfurt I could speed up thanks to the tailwind. Through Hassfurt, there was a lot of traffic and the part afterwards was also not very beautiful.

In Sand I shopped more beverages in a Rewe shop. Short later I had suddenly no air anymore in my back wheel. Luckily I found the splinter of glass and had to fix the inner tube. „Luckily“ because I was already worried if the weight got too much with the additional two bottles (3kg). It took some time until I managed the repair, but at least it seems to be fine again. Let‘s see if there is still air in the wheel tomorrow. It was the first “Platte“ (if you know the English word, leave a comment 😉 ). During my tour along the Danube I never had one. But better that, than something more difficult to fix.

Since it got now later than assumed, I booked a hotel in Bamberg. At 18:15 I arrived and there were so many people in the alleys of the inner city, so that I had to push my bike. The hotel‘s position is extremly close to the old town hall. There is also a row of fisherman‘s houses and other very old beautiful buildings. I will sightsee them tomorrow morning in the daily light.

For dinner I said to myself: Nothing with cheese, because the last two days I already had cheesy food. What did I take: Käsespätzle, and it was a huge pan of Käsespätzle (too much at the end). Maybe tomorrow no cheese anymore 😀 . But it is difficult to find vegetarian food here without containing cheese. Last point to mention: I took a glass of Federweisser, which is very common for the region here. It is like very sweet white wine, but more like must and less alcohol (a bit like Sauser in Switzerland). Since I like sweet wine, I enjoyed Federweisser a lot.
