2020-08-14: Day 04 Donaueschingen – Sigmaringen (104km, total 313km)

Today the real Danube trip started. The three days before were mainly to get to the spring of the Danube.

I slept on the camping Riedsee 5km away from Donaueschingen. It rained in the night and when I woke up some small puddles of water were in the tent. At least everything was in the bike bags and they are fully waterproof. Also the bedroll was still dry.

After packing everything I drove back to Donaueschingen because I wanted to see the first meters of the Danube. While I already visited the Donauquelle yesterday, I think the meeting points of the rivers Brigach and Breg are important as well. From that point the river is called Danube.

The bike route (Donauradweg) is marked very good and I don‘t have any troubles to find the way. First the Danube flows through wide and more or less flat land. I admire the Donauversickerung. All the water disappears in the ground because of the Jura limestone. A kilometer later no drop of water of the Danube is anymore visible.

In Tuttlingen the Euro bike route 6 joins and it will be the path to follow to the Black Sea (or at least as far as Corona allows it currently, probably Hungary).

Now the region gets more and more wild with many ruins on the steep rocks on both side of the valley. The buildings are replaced by the nature. Meanwhile it is raining a lot and it will stay like that until the evening. The region here is absolutely amazing and would also be beautiful for hiking.

Instead of camping I decide to book a room in a hotel and drive a bit longer to Sigmaringen. After more than 100km I‘m tired in the hotel room. It‘s good to be in a warm room with a soft bed 🙂 .
