2020-08-19: Day 09 Neustadt – Regensburg (69km, total 697km)

In the night was the last rain for some days and it will get warmer and warmer with more than 30 degrees on Friday.

On the way from Bad Gögging to the oldest monastery brewery Weltenburg (of the year 1050) were many hop fields. I don’t know if they all belong to the mentioned Weltenburg beer. At least it needs a lot beer because so many people were visiting the monastry and/or the beer and/or the Donaudurchbruch. At the weekend it would be even worse. The interior of the monastery’s church was very beautiful.

From Weltenburg I took the ship to Kelheim to see the nature spectacle, called Donaudurchbruch or Weltenburger Enge. Huge walls of up to 80m and a water depth of 20m mark this part of the Danube. On the ship I tried a small dark Weltenburger beer. I‘m not a beer expert, but it was definitively not that bitter as many Swiss beers.

Already from the ship an impressive building was visible above Kelheim. I hiked up the hill and was astonished at the height of the building. I bought a ticket to see what is inside and it was as amazing as the outside. King Ludwig I. of Bavaria (Bayern) built it between 1842 and 1863 after the successes during the fights against Napoleon 1813-1815.

More and more boats and ships can be observed on the Danube. Rather fast I biked to Regensburg. The kilometers to Regensburg on ths signposts were not always correct and it felt that the town doesn’t come closer. But suddenly I was in middle of the town. I already drove 69km until here.

In Regensburg I met again the Swiss group from the previous days and campings. I visited the cathedral St. Peter and museum of its treasures.

Afterwards I checked the distance to Straubing with the next camping. It‘s a bit too far for today. I looked short on booking.com if there is a cheap alternative to the camping and found a hostel close to my current position and to the center of the city. A good bed from time to time isn‘t the worst 😉 .

While sightseeing the stony bridge (Steinerne Brücke), who could I met? You could mean that Regensburg is a small village. Together with the group of Swiss people – maybe I shouldn‘t write Swiss people anymore, because they are from France/Belgium/Germany as well – we take an ice cream and afterwards a coffee (or I a cola) together. Funny how often we crossed each other meanwhile and probably tomorrow as well. Let‘s see 😀 !
